Les Marteilles, 24320 Bouteilles St Sebastien, Dordogne, France.
The entire estate perches prettily on top of one of the rolling hills of north west Dordogne. This is an outstandingly beautiful region of France and in summer, the hills and valleys are blooming with Sunflowers, wheat and maize.
From everywhere you look from the estate, you have an incredible view which never gets tired.
The valleys below bustle with rivers and pretty villages and towns dot the horizon.
Whilst largely an agricultural area, in summer it’s popular with tourists but far less frenetic than the sometimes crowded areas along the Dordogne river itself.
Les Marteilles is close to two villages, Verteillac and St Severin, each of which are reached by a 5-10 minute drive and each of which has a post office, butcher, baker, grocer, bars and restaurants.
The local area offers plenty to do. There are weekly markets at the nearest towns (Ribérac and Aubeterre-sur-Dronne), plenty of authentic French restaurants, beautiful towns and cities to visit and plenty of outdoor activities for adults and children. Cycling, walking, canoeing and running enthusiasts are in paradise here. The city of Angouleme is a 40 minute drive away, Bergerac is 1 hour away and Bordeaux is 1.75 hours away.
By night, the lack of light pollution means a spectacular star display and the planets, satellites and International Space Station can all be clearly seen by sky-watchers. The milky way is easily visible on a clear night, especially during summer and autumn.
Sitting on one of the many terraces of the owners’ house and gîtes is better than watching TV. Nature offers an incredible display, from butterflies to tree frogs, to deer to spectacular birds of prey including eagles, kites and buzzards.
